Disney Parks News REVIEW: Award Wieners Reopens With Corn Dogs and Apple Pie Funnel Cake Fries for Buena Vista Street at Disney California Adventure

With the reopening of Buena Vista Street in Disney California Adventure comes the return of in-park shopping and dining. We had to swing by Award Wieners for the first time in eight months and get a corn dog.

Typically, when we think Award Wieners at Disney California Adventure, our mind goes to Carne Asada Fries however its menu offerings are now borrowed another fan favorite, Corn Dog Castle—where corn dogs rule!

With the rest of Disney California Adventure closed to guests, Disney had to bring the classic theme park food over from the Paradise Gardens Park, so while you may not be able to get some of the more creative offerings Award Wieners usually has, you’ll still be able to snack on a piping hot corn dog in between shopping and strolling about.

Award Wieners is utilizing mobile order and social distancing markers.

We ordered a corn dog (with chips) and the apple pie funnel cake fries.

Original Corn Dog – $9.79

Corn dogs are now served with a bag of Lay’s chips.

Although this corn dog wasn’t the prettiest, it was overall pretty good.

The outside is a shell of deep-fried corn dog batter that was sweet while also being somewhat salty. The breading was the best part, as it had a nice crunch on the outside but was soft and fluffy on the inside.

The hot dog on the inside was basic, but good nonetheless.

The Lay’s chips on the side made it a nice combo, but we were definitely missing the film strip fries!

Apple Pie Funnel Cake Fries – $8.99

These fries are coated with cinnamon sugar and topped with apple pie filling, caramel sauce, whipped cream, and streusel.

These are a very sweet dessert option. The funnel cake fries with cinnamon sugar by themselves are a pretty tasty snack.

The apple pie filling is really heavy and sweet. The apples in the filling are the weakest part of this dessert, and we ended up eating around them. They tasted like canned apples in syrup, and the texture was off. The caramel sauce with the whipped cream and streusel is a nice, light topping on top of the heavy pie filling.

Overall, we would get these again, especially for $8.99. The portion is a good size and enough for two to share. If you like apple pies, then you’ll like these fries!

Disney: Bo Peep set for theme-park appearances in 'Toy Story 4' mode

Another “Toy Story” character is on the horizon at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Bo Peep, who plays a significant role in the upcoming Pixar film “Toy Story 4,” will be making special appearances in the theme park beginning sometime this summer.

Other “Toy Story” figures currently in the park include Buzz Lightyear, Woody and Jessie. Visitors can line up to meet them in the park’s Toy Story Land, which opened last year.

In the film, adventurous Bo (voiced by Annie Potts) is reunited with Woody (Tom Hanks). The lost-her-sheep character did not appear in 2010’s “Toy Story 3.”

“Toy Story 4” comes to theaters on June 21.

Bo Peep will also be making appearances at Disney California Adventure, Disneyland Paris and parks in Asia, Disney says. In announcing the Peep news on Thursday, the company did not specify when or where the characters will appear.

REVIEW: Black Bean Chips with Mango Sriracha Hummus Adds Some Spice to Magic Kingdom

As I was walking through Adventureland today, I decided to stop by Tortuga Tavern (current home of the wonderful Pepper Jack Pretzel), and I stumbled across a new menu item! Those crafty pirates in the galley have added “Black Bean Chips” to the Tavern’s repertoire.

The chips come with your choice of hummus as a dip. Being that this is Adventureland, I decided against my natural inclination for traditional hummus and decided to be adventurous. Mango Sriracha Hummus it is, then!

Black Bean Chips and Hummus – $5.49

After what was an uncomfortably long wait considering I only ordered chips, this is what I got. Not much to look at, right? Looks can be deceiving, though. These chips are really quite good! The chips themselves weren’t served warm, but were definitely fresh. They have a nice saltiness to them, and just the right amount of crunch. I’ve eaten a lot of mediocre corn chips, but these aren’t that at all.

The hummus wasn’t what I was expecting. It was served chilled, and was surprisingly subtle. The hummus flavor is the first thing you taste, followed by the mango, which adds a nice sweetness to it. The sriracha flavor is only there to add a hint of heat, which thankfully does not linger.

They also offer a “Pineapple Jalapeno” hummus, or traditional hummus if you’re not up for spicy.

Overall, I was really impressed by these chips. The chips could stand on their own, but the hummus really adds an extra kick. They may not look that great, but as either a snack or a side for your meal, you can’t really go wrong with these. My only real complaint is that I didn’t get enough chips! But really, when do you ever get enough chips?

These are available at the Tortuga Tavern in Magic Kingdom (right across from Pirates of the Caribbean), and are $5.49.

Disney takes home Oscar gold from the Academy Awards

Even with no host, the Oscars ceremony ran smoothly and barely went over the announced time length. The Oscars are televised in more than 225 countries and territories worldwide, which makes this an important night for Hollywood and the studios involved.

It was a good year for the Walt Disney Studios, not known for producing the type of films the Academy likes to nominate for an Oscar, with the company taking home 4 Oscars. Disney Studio chair Alan Horn was in the audience and so was Disney CEO Bob Iger. We also saw a number of Disney stars walking the red carpet before the ceremony began.

Black Panther is the first movie from Marvel Studios to win an Academy Award, and it picked up three – Best Costume Design, Best Production Design, and Best Soundtrack. Truly an important and remarkable film. Although it didn’t win for Best Picture, it was amazing to have it even nominated.

Ruth E. Carter kicked things off for Disney and Marvel by winning for costume design for her work on Black Panther. I love this backstage shot showing off her own marvelous gown.

Hannah Beachler made Oscar history as the first African American to win the Academy Award for Best Production Design with co-winner Jay Hart. It’s also the first year that more than one black woman has won an Oscar in the same year.

Ludwig Göransson won for his creative and original soundtrack for Black Panther. A longtime collaborator with director Ryan Coogler, Göransson did a ton of research for the sounds and music that made its way into the film and it showed.

I hope this encourages Disney and Marvel Studios to continue to give directors like Ryan Coogler and his production team the green light to make important films, even when they’re super hero movies.

Although Pixar lost for best Animated Feature, it did win with the animated short ‘Bao.’ Domee Shi directed and Becky Neiman-Cobb produced the short film, hopefully the first in a wave of new women directors and executives making stories up in Emeryville.

I do have a few small bones to pick with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences… first, they left out a few important people from the “In Memoriam” section including former Disney president Ron Miller. Not only did Miller create Touchstone Pictures, he had producer credit on dozens of films. Also left out of the segment was Lucasfilm’s Gary Kurtz, a longtime producer of Star Wars movies, and David Ogden Stiers, who Disney fans remember from Pocahontas. Finally, while I love Bette Midler, I would have loved to hear Emily Blunt sing the song from Mary Poppins Returns.

What did you think of the host-less version of the Oscars? What were your favorite moments from the night?

Pepe by José Andrés quick-service concept coming to Disney Springs

The Disney Parks Blog has revealed new details on Pepe by José Andrés, a new quick-service concept that will be located right next to Andrés’ other restaurant, Jaleo, which opens this winter.

 pepe

This new quick-service location will offer hot and cold Spanish-style sandwiches.

Pepe by José Andrés is inspired by the Washington, D.C. food truck of the same name – this is one of its first-ever brick-and-mortar locations. The menu will feature hot and cold Spanish-style sandwiches, including bocatas and bikinis.

Some of the menu’s highlights include:

  • Pollo Frito – breaded chicken breast, alioli, braves sauce, piparra peppers, gem lettuce, and sherry dressing
  • Serrano y Manchego – served on crispy Pan de Cristal with tomato fresco
  • Bocata de Vegetales – roasted peppers, onion, green asparagus, spinach, and manchego cheese on Pan de Cristal

In addition to the Spanish-style sandwiches, Pepe will also offer salads, soups, and sides along with Spanish sangria.

The walls of Pepe will be decorated with a mural created by Marc Jesús, a famous Menorcan painter, featuring his blue-skinned female characters.

There is no set opening date for either restaurant, though Jaleo is expected to open this winter.

REVIEW: Sweetheart Strawberry Beignets – Valentine’s Month at Disneyland Park

Everyone loves iconic Disney treats. One could argue that the Mickey-shaped beignets are one of the more iconic treats in Disneyland. So how do you make an already iconic treat more desirable? You add strawberry flavoring to the powdered sugar. This strawberry-flavored beignet option is available during Disneyland’s Valentine’s Month Celebration at the Mint Julep Bar in Disneyland Park.

Sweetheart Strawberry Beignets – 3 for $5.49

These strawberry beignets look very similar to traditional beignets. You can definitely tell the difference when you bite into them. I’m a bit of a beignet snob and will often tell people that I prefer the beignets at Ralph Brennan’s Jazz Kitchen Express in Downtown Disney to Disneyland’s beignets. I prefer these strawberry beignets to the traditional ones served by Mint Julep. The strawberry flavor is a natural pairing with the powdered sugar. I highly recommend grabbing yourself some of these powdery treats before they go away.

The Disney Parks Blog advertised these beignets as being chocolate-covered strawberry beignets, but I could not detect any chocolate in the powder. I think they were straight-up strawberry beignets. I’m not sure what happened there with that advertising or if it will change in the future. In any case, let us know what you thought about these Mickey-shaped treats if you tried them.
